I was a graduate student at UB in the Department of Biochemical Pharmacology and Betty played an instrumental role in my education. She was a great scientist with a wonderful sense of humor and a love for life. She also had excellent culinary skills. I remember fondly the time she taught me and Aleta how to make delicious pierogi. I learned so much from Betty and will never forget her kindness and beautiful smile. Alicia and Paul, I am so sorry for your loss.

It was with sadness that I learned of the passing of Betty Luchowski. I met Betty when I did my Doctorate degree at the University of Buffalo with Dr. David Triggle. During the four years that I spend in the laboratory, it became clear how really special a person that Betty was, not just as a colleague in science but a friend in "life". That time in David's laboratory was a s busy one for me, not only with my research, but in m personal life as I got married and started what has turned out to be a wonderful life; Betty was always there to offer advice and answer my questions and keep me grounded! In the acknowledgment section of my Ph.D. I wrote the following about Betty:
"My sincere gratitude to Betty Luchowski for her technical expertise in the planning and carrying-out of the muscarinic receptor binding studies and the majority of 3H-Nitrendipine binding studies. Furthermore, I would like to thank Betty for her kindness, knowing where things were in the lab and good coffee, all of which kept me going on those long days in the lab"
It is without doubt that Betty had a profound impact on my scientific career and my life. To her family, my sincerest condolences, may the anguish her loss be replaced by the knowledge that she impacted so many lives in such a profoundly positive way.

Dear Alicia and Paul, My deepest sympathy goes to you and your families on the death of your mother...I wish I could be there with you for her memorial service.
When my family arrived in Buffalo in 1953 from our long and arduous post war journey, the Polish community welcomed us with open arms. Elizabeth was the first friend I made and she took me under her wing. Soon there was a flurry of activities...Szaniec, Polish dances, parties, Polish students club at UB and so on. She always seemed to have an extra ticket for me to attend concerts at Kleinhans Music Hall. I owe much of my musical education to her for that.. As our lives diverged over the years we stayed in touch and tried to be there for each other through thick and thin...even after I moved clear across the country to the West.
When the "Gray Geese" came into being in 1987 ((a group of four fast friends from college) our children were grown by then and we began to travel together. Elizabeth had a knack for scheduling... so she often would arrange our activities to maximize our time and make the most of what a particular place had to offer. We took fabulous trips together for the next 25 years...from the blue blue waters of the Bahamas to the crazy glitzy glitter of Las Vegas ...to the wonderful Shakespearean productions at Stratford on Avon in Canada... we have so many fond memories of our times together...
And so it is with great sadness that I must say goodbye to my good friend Elizabeth aka "Snow Goose". Your time bound to earth has ended and now you can soar high above the clouds unencumbered by the tethers of earthly trials and tribulations . We will miss you very much.
Lidia Dubicka Donahue aka Mother Goose"

Betty was my dearest friend. We met at UB over 40 years ago when we both started to work in the Department of Biochemical Pharmacology. I've learned so much from my dear friend dealing with all aspects of life - work, family, politics, history, music, gardening. We laughed and cried, mostly we laughed. I will always treasure our friendship and the memories. Betty made such a positive impact on my life and the lives of so many. My love to Alicia and Paul.

Dear Alicia and Paul:
My deepest sympathy on the passing of your Mother Elizabeth. I have known her since 1954, from U.B. as well as many a Polish dance evening. She was a very hard worker already then, as her Mother passed away and she had to run the bakery as well as attend classes.
Lately we had fun at our Grey Goose Gatherings in Montana, Wingham, Ontario, Bahamas and Las Vegas. We have many fond memories.
I send you both a warm hug.
Affectionately, Ene

I very much regret that I cannot be present today on this occasion to say a few words about a very special person. I knew Elizabeth for many years during my 50+ year career at UB. During those years she was a mainstay in the School of Pharmacy on the UB South Campus. She played a very important dual role in the Biochemical Pharmacology program - serving as a critical member of the undergraduate degree program, in running the teaching laboratory and an equally important role in assisting faculty research. My own graduate students will certainly testify on just how much they gained from Betty’s hands on lab expertise. In fact , they probably could not have accomplished all that they did without Betty’s help.
However, her role was not just as an assistant. She made, together with my other lab colleague Aleta Rutledge real and original contributions. Hence her name appears on a number of original scientific publications that continue to be cited today because our lab was a pioneer in an important area of ion channel drugs and diseases.
I have retired now from UB – but amongst my favorite memories as I age are those good days in the lab with Betty, Aleta and all the undergraduate and graduate students. Rest in peace Betty.
David Triggle, Professor retired from UB.

Elizabeth was the first to welcome me to the Chorale when I joined originally in the fall of 1980. And so many of the members have the same story. With her quiet wit and generous spirit, Elizabeth's love of music and choral singing lifted the Chorale for many years. She appreciated the works of the creative spirit in many areas and her life story was inspiring. Elizabeth and Joe filled their home with music, dancing and celebration of friendship and family. My sincere sympathy to Alicia and Paul and your families. She leaves many enduring memories in our hearts.
