Obituary of Park L. Metzger, Jr.

METZGER - Park L., Jr. Age 93, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2017 surrounded by family at his home in Fox Run, Orchard Park, NY. Park was born in Buffalo, NY to Park L. Metzger Sr., and Ruth L. Metzger on January 18, 1924. He graduated from Bennett High School in 1942 and went on to earn a civil engineering degree from Cornell University in 1946, as a third generation Cornell Alum. While at Cornell, he served in the Army ROTC and upon graduation enlisted in the Navy, receiving an honorable discharge in 1954. After Cornell, Park entered the family business, Metzger Construction Corp., a long-standing Buffalo based general construction company formed in 1890, again as a third generation member. He managed the construction of many major commercial projects such as: schools, hospitals, apartment buildings, bridges, water treatment plants and industrial plant projects throughout New York State. Park served as President of both Metzger and Aquasan Corp., a specialty waste and water treatment firm he founded in 1971. He was a 50 year (life member) of The Buffalo Club (which Metzger Construction helped build), and a longtime member of both the Orchard Park Country Club and Buffalo Yacht Cub. Park was an avid outdoorsman, boating, hunting and fishing throughout North America, and he passed that appreciation of the outdoors onto his sons and grandchildren. He was an accomplished blue-water sailor and together with his wife Virginia, sailed their beloved Gulfstar 50' Ketch "Sirenuse" throughout Caribbean, Bahamian and N. Atlantic waters into their 80s. Park is survived by his wife of 69 years, Virginia Radley Metzger of Orchard Park, NY; sons, Peter Radley Metzger and his wife Lisa of West Falls, NY, Thomas Sovereign Metzger and his wife Terry of Greenwood Village, CO, and Stephen Montgomery Metzger of Reno, NV; siblings, Margaret M. Keane and Lee L. Metzger; and four grandchildren, Philip, Thomas, Allison and Emily. He is preceded in death by his parents, Park L. Metzger Sr. and Ruth L. Metzger.
